The dancer
Dancing was the door
I kept walking past.
Until one day I didn’t. This page is the short version of a long love story with ballet.
Hello — I’m Grace.
Like a lot of dancers, my story doesn’t run in a straight line. There were childhood classes and scratchy tutus, then years away — study, work, life — while ballet waited patiently in the background, the way it does.
When I finally came back to the barre as an adult, I expected to feel behind. Instead I felt at home. The technique was rusty; the love wasn’t. Since then, ballet has become the steadiest thread in my week: class, rehearsal, sore calves, small victories.
Graceful Ballet is my journal of that life. I write the entries I wish I could have read on day one — honest about the frustrations, generous with the joy, practical wherever I can be.
Notes in time
-
20XX
First plié
A village-hall class, pink leather shoes a size too big, and no idea what was beginning.
-
20XX
The return
One nervous adult beginners’ class — booked, cancelled, re-booked, finally attended.
-
20XX
First pointe shoes
Fitted, sewn, feared, adored. My feet and I are still in negotiations.
-
20XX
First stage
Four minutes of choreography, four months of work, one unforgettable evening.
-
Now
This journal
Writing it all down — so I remember, and so it might help someone else begin.
A few true things
- I will always choose the earliest class. Empty studios in morning light are my favourite place on earth.
- Adagio is my happy place; petit allegro is my humbling place.
- I keep a paper notebook in my dance bag — corrections written down are corrections remembered.
- I believe there is no such thing as “too late” to start, only “not yet”.
If any of this sounds like your story too — or the story you’re considering — I’d genuinely love to hear from you.
