What’s in my dance bag (and what never leaves it)
A dance bag is a small autobiography. Mine has been packed and repacked hundreds of times, and a permanent cast of residents has emerged — the things that have earned their place through actual use, plus one or two that stay for reasons the heart understands better than the head.
The working residents
Shoes, obviously — but two pairs. My current soft blocks and the beaten-up old pair that have moulded so perfectly to my feet I keep them for days when everything else feels wrong. Old shoes are pure comfort with elastic attached.
The corrections notebook. A small paper notebook and a pencil stub. Within an hour of class I write down every correction I can remember, in my own words. This single habit has done more for my technique than any single class ever has. It never, ever leaves the bag.
Toe tape and a tiny sewing kit. Needle, ballet-pink thread, safety pins, spare elastic. Ribbons choose their moments to surrender, and those moments are never convenient.
A resistance band. For pre-class foot and ankle warm-ups in the corridor. Mine is faded to the colour of weak tea, which I choose to read as proof of virtue.
Layers. Fitted warm-up top, leg warmers, thick socks for the stone-cold minutes before the studio heating remembers its purpose.
The unglamorous trio. Water bottle, plasters, hair pins in every pocket and lining of the bag, multiplying according to laws science has yet to explain.
The sentimental resident
A ribbon from my first pair of pointe shoes, pressed flat inside the notebook’s back cover. It serves no function. It is not leaving.
What I’ve stopped carrying
An enormous foam roller (the studio has them), three kinds of muscle rub (one is plenty), and the guilt-inducing theory book I was allegedly going to read between classes. The bag got lighter; the dancing didn’t suffer.
If your own bag has a strange permanent resident — the lucky pin, the retired shoe ribbon — I’d love to hear about it. Dancers are magpies with excellent posture, and I find the evidence endlessly charming.
